Assignment 1: Glossary of Terms:

The purpose of this assignment is for you to understand the words that are used to describe computers and the way they work. You will need to understand them so that you can put together a virtual computer for
the last assignment.

To do this you will be making up your own glossary, using the Internet to find definitions and descriptions.

Open a Word Processing document.

Using this Webopedia site and the glossary, or any site that you have searched copy and paste the definitions
for the following words. Have your glossary in alphabetical order and neatly formatted. You may consider
putting this entire unit into a PowerPoint presentation or a web page.

Words to be researched and understood.

Assignment 2: How does it all work?

Using the Internet as your resource (check resource page for a some url help) find out how all the parts of a computer fit together and how the computer works. Organize your information into a PowerPoint or Web page using the following general headings:

  • History
  • Hardware
  • Processors
  • Operating systems
  • Networking

Design this part so that it can be used to inform your parents or anyone who wants to buy a computer but has absolutely no idea about how computers work.

Assignment 3: Build your own computer system

Now that you have some understanding of computer workings and the parts of computers, it is time to do a
virtual purchase of a computer system.

You may use the following scenario or develop your own (e.g. computer for your own use, for use at home etc.). When advising someone on a computer purchase, the most important question is......?

Design some way of reporting to the user that includes

  • a description of what the computer is needed for.
  • what are the best solutions for computer hardware, software and networking
  • include pricing where appropriate

Possible scenario:

You are the computer technician for a small accounting company for 20 employees. The company has a small server on which they save and share files. They need to update their desktop computers to allow them to run Micrsoft Excel and Access as shared software, along with accounting software and word processing. They also require the use of Internet for e-mail and business research and they have access to a good networked laser printer.

You are required to find a workstation computer for under $2000. The company would also like to know what the lease price would be.This workstation requires a monitor, keyboard and mouse as the only peripherals along with an Ethernet card to access the network. The CPU needs to have a minimum of 13.5 Mgs. of Hard drive memory, 128 Mgs of RAM but does not need a good video or sound system. The megahertz will depend on what is available for the price.

There is no requirement for zip or gloppy drives but a CD read/writer is rquired.
