New Words:

Selective Breeding: people select plants for different characteristics and encourage their reproduction.

Gene: the genetic material of a living organism.

Sexual reproduction: a process that involves the production of sees and fruits from the specialized reproductive cells of two individuals.

Asexual or Vegetative reproduction: a type of reproduction that occurs when a "parent" plant grows new plants from its roots, stems or leaves.

Cone: is a part of a tree that has woody scales. There are male and female cones that carry the reproductive cells. The female cone contains ovules (eggs). The male cone contains pollen (sperm) cells. The wind carries the pollen to the female cone, where it pollinates the ovule.

Pollen

Flower: the structure that attracts insects to which carry pollen on their bodies which pollinates the ovule.

Activities

Activity 1: Using the diagram on page 124 and other resources make a detailed labelled diagram that describes pollination in flowering plants.

Activity 2: Describe the function of each part of the reproductive process.

  • cones
  • flowers
  • stemen
    • anther
    • pollen
    • filament
  • pistil
    • stigma
    • style
    • ovary
    • ovules
  • seeds
  • fruit

2. What are possible pollinators?

3. What is the function of the flower?

4. What is the function of the cone?
