Mrs. Nowlan's Grade 7 Science

Unit 4: Structures and Forces

Final Project

You may present your research in the form of a booklet, illustrated poster, PowerPoint presentation, illustrated word document or whatever format you consider to be an effective way to present your information. The presentation needs to include the following:

Title Page:

  • Name of structure
  • Picture of structure
  • Group members and class number

Body of Information

  • Location
  • Purpose of structure, past and present
  • Historical information - when was it built, cost, architect
  • Description of structure - dimensions, style, design, construction technique, how long it took to construct, vulnerability to damage/destruction. Include pictures.
  • Interesting facts.
  • Glossary of Terms

Part B: Model Building Process
Insert the Problem Solving Model into the project

  • Problem: To build a model of the structure
    • Specifications:
      1. The structure must be free standing
      2. The structure must resemble the research topic
      3. It must be attractive
      4. It must be to scale
  • Developing a Plan:
    • Select the appropriate materials to build your structure. In the project, explain in full sentences the properties (characteristics) of the materials used. Explain why you selected the materials you did.
    • On a blank piece of paper, draw a diagram of what you are going to build. Label the diagram. Be sure to use a ruler and keep all labels on the right hand side in a column.
  • Carry out the Plan:
    • Describe the building process: what you did and how. Be specific. Include the problems that you had. What problems would occur if you added load and forces to your model?
  • Evaluation:
    1. Evaluate your model out of 20
    2. Describe any modifications or changes you would make if you were to do the project again.
